Preparing for the exhibition

The Wedge team began installing the exhibition on 6th April 2009. All the team worked hard to complete the majority of the exhibition before the Easter break. I have not revealed the installation until know as I did not want to spoil the exhibition for anyone.

In the middle of the gallery we constructed the prototype design of Speakers’ Corner. On the top of the prototype we placed a map of Dam Street and small scale pieces of the prototype. This will enable visitors to the exhibition to interact with Speakers’ Corner and place the pieces in positions where they feel that they look best.

The Speakers’ Corner logo being applied to the gallery wall. When completed it will have the names of the groups involved on the coloured arrows.

Making the prototype

Members of Central St Martins, Lichfield Wedge team and Lichfield Speakers’ Corner committee members gathered in Dam Street to build the prototype. Fernanda from the Central St Martins team explained to everyone how to put the pieces together.

Constructing Speakers’ Corner took most of the afternoon, but when it was complete it looked impressive!

Speakers’ Corner was complete after the hexagon shaped platform had been added. Will from the Speakers’ Corner committee tested it out for the teams.

Next members of the public were invited to interact with the prototype and each other. This encouraged a range of age groups and they were asked if they would use the facility along with other questions. Reply’s were positive it was a great success all round.

Speakers Corner Workshop

A workshop was held at Lichfield campus on 9-2-09. Students from Central St Martins College travelled from London to lead the workshop, while students from Lichfield School of Art acted as facilitators.
Members of Lichfield Speakers Corner commitee attended.

All involved in the workshop went out to look at the possible location in Dam Street and took part in a task looking at why people might visit that location and what time of day they might visit. They also looked at what part of the space made them feel comfortable and things they liked and disliked about the space.

Models of the possible layout of Speakers Corner were created to scale to enable members of the workshop to visualize what it might look like.
